About Red Jack
Red Jack began in a community of readers brought together by Books Are Sick. Many were also talented writers, artists, and designers. What started as an innocent offer to help became a group chat, then a Discord server, and eventually a publishing company.
The company was created to support that community and make things happen. We're willing to take risks on people and ideas that could be overlooked or hard to put into a neat box. Some projects arrive polished. Others begin very rough around the edges and are developed in a channel for that purpose. Watching them take shape live is amazing. If an idea has a certain je ne sais quoi, we create a space to help build on it.
The press is Canadian, but the community has always been international. That shaped our outlook, and it's part of our history and how we build relationships.
Before Red Jack, there was Spittoon—a name that symbolized experimentation and unrestrained creativity. Although we adopted Red Jack, we haven't completely given up Spit.
There's one more thing. There's no Press, Books, or Editions—just Red Jack. Quite simply, that's because we have a lot of things we want to do. Our roots are also in the shack, the woods, things done by hand and bad weather.
We look forward to showing you how we make books. With people. And yes, we want those books to leave a mark.
